Togher Boundary Walk - Ted O'Riordan

Whilst the Blog serves as the voice of the Togher Historical Association and endeavours to  " Talk the Talk " , one Togher local  decided , following the 2nd Boundary Debate held on 19th September 2014 , to literally " Walk the Walk! ". So it was on Wednesday 8th October that Ted O'Riordan set off on a pre-planned course around some of the District boundary of Togher ( which also incorporated most of the Catholic Parish of the same name ). For practical reasons , it was decided to shave off sections of the terrain south of Chetwynd ( Knocknamallavoge and Knockalisheen ) due in the main to the private ownership of the farming Townlands and the westerly Townlands of Lehenagh More and Lehenagh Beg due to the difficulty of negotiating cross country routes.

 Boundaries Walk 2014

Carrying the pride of Togher on his shoulders Ted O'Riordan set off in the afternoon from Sandown Crest using this as his starting point for a rigorous round trip of 15.36 Kilometres which he completed in 2 Hours and 21 Minutes. Despite the inclement weather , he braved the elements wholeheartedly and captured some brilliant checkpoint photographs along the way as proof of his achievement. What began as a sunny day eventually descended into a downpour on the homeward stretch. Nevertheless , the walk was completed in admirable style and with great panache. The Blog would like to take this opportunity to thank him for his noble and selfless efforts in promoting the District and Parish through his fantastic walk.

Absolutely fantastic achievement and I have no doubt that if a roadway had connected Spur Cross to the Airport Road that Ted would have done that as well! The fact that he openly volunteered his services makes this all the more remarkable. Well done again Ted. I suspect that this is the first time anybody has attempted a near full boundary walk of Togher District ; indeed the first of any District in the Cork Metropolitan Area! Definitely a first in many respects and done by a Togher man in Togher
