Book Launch - Trevor Welch - Murphy's Brewery - 6th November 2015

Invitation slip from Currach Press for Book Launch

On behalf of the Togher Historical Assoc. , Billy O'Brien was invited to the launch of " The Jolly Roger " at Murphy's Brewery on Friday 6th November 2015. This was poignant in that the Co-Author was legendary TV3 Sports Broadcaster Trevor Welch - a native of Togher who originally hailed from Edward Walsh Road. But his roots lay in Pirate Radio in Togher in the 1970s and early 1980s. And this is what the book chronicles amongst many other things. From South Coast Radio , E.R.I. to TV3 and the world stage and everything in between.

The event was attended by over 130 people from all walks of life and the room was a whose who of Pirate Radio D.J.s whose voices crackled over the F.M. frequency all those years ago into the homes of many Togher teenagers. Cllr. Fergal Dennehy accompanied Billy O'Brien to the gathering and many introductions were initiated with Teachers , Reporters and Radio Producers , where the Togher Historical Assoc. was formally made known.

Following a few photographic moments and an impromptu book signing by Trevor Welch , the night began with finger food and beverages. With no shortage of D.J.s the decks were soon rolling with 1980s tunes which gave a nice atmospheric feel to the place. Featured Guests of Honour included Neil Prendeville , P.J. Coogan and Romano with the Lord Mayor Cllr Chris O'Leary giving the speech.

Trevor Welch and his sibling Noel each gave a heart warming acknowledgement to all Pirate D.J.s from the past with some funny anecdotes about transatlantic accents thrown in for good measure. Sadly , a good friend of the Togher Historical Assoc. - Pat O'Rourke - a former Pirate D.J. was unable to attend due to work commitments. But it is planned to tell the story of the " Smurph " from Togher ( Deanrock Estate ) in the near future.

The Togher Historical Association wish Trevor and Noel Welch every success with the book and would like to take the opportunity to thank Cllr. Fergal Dennehy for arranging the invitation. And finally a massive thanks to the various D.J.s who generously agreed to pose for photographs.
